Snooze-cation Rentals: Sleep in Unique Lodging

june 10 sleeping in a lighthouseThe best thing about traveling is getting the chance to try new things: scarf some local cuisine, catch a hometown band, and experience landmarks firsthand. But why should your waking hours get all the fun? A “snooze-cation” is a trip planned around a fun, unique sleeping experience. From quirky cottages to haunted inns, there are unforgettable sleep destinations in all corners of the globe–if you know where to look.

Novelty Bed and Breakfasts

The town of Cottonwood, Idaho, is home to one of the most unusual bed and breakfast locations in the country: the Dog Bark Park Inn, a cozy B&B shaped like a giant beagle. It’s probably the only place in the world where you can sleep in a dog’s nose–one of its two bedrooms is right in the dog’s snout. The rooms are dog-themed, naturally, and the inn can sleep up to four. If trains are more your speed, you can sleep in a themed caboose at the Featherbed Railroad Caboose Bed and Breakfast Resort in Nice, California. True to its name – in more ways than one – guests sleep on genuine goose down mattresses.

Sleep with Ghosts

Plenty of these homes have been around long enough to acquire a ghost or two. The Red Garter Inn in Williams, Arizona, is a restored, Wild West-era bordello purported to house a ghost named Eve, while the Farnsworth House in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, hosts Civil War spirits. For those who really want to up the creep factor, the Lizzie Borden House in Fall River, Massachusetts, lets you sleep in a famous, historic crime scene.

Snooze in a Lighthouse

The iconic form of the lighthouse is more than just a beacon, it’s a symbol of safety and refuge. They’re also beautiful structures that often have a fascinating history. Did you know you can actually stay in many of them? Lighthouse accommodations are available in 18 states. Some, like Frying Pan Tower near Bald Head Island, North Carolina, are available on a vacation rental basis, while others offer a different arrangement. At New Dungeness Light Station near Sequim, Washington, for example, you can actually be a lighthouse keeper for a season.

Go Glamping

Glamping, a portmanteau of “glamorous camping,” is enjoying its moment in the sun. Glamping allows people to enjoy the outdoors without the perceived downsides that deter many people from camping (like sleeping on the ground and peeing outside). Glamping sites provide many of the comforts of home and can take various forms from a barn or cabin to a teepee or treehouse. There are glamping sites located throughout the United States and all over the world, and the official Glamping website has a “Unique and Unusual” category with offerings like a houseboat in Germany, Conestoga wagons in Utah, and an ice hotel in Sweden.

If your travel budget is non-existent, you can turn a staycation into a snooze-cation with a little creativity. Set up a pillow fort in your living room or pitch a tent in your backyard–the main ingredients for a successful snooze-cation are quality sleep and a sense of adventure.
